1990 Impel Marvel Universe Series 1
The foundational modern comic-card box, hologram chase inside
Why it matters
1990 Impel Marvel Universe Series 1 wax is the box that opened the modern comic-book trading card era. Impel had full Marvel Comics licensing at a moment when no company had made a mass-produced modern comic card set, and the 162-card checklist plus MH1-MH5 hologram chase (Spider-Man, Wolverine, Silver Surfer, Magneto, and the Cosmic Spider-Man) launched a category the hobby had never had before. Every Marvel and DC card set for the next thirty years is a descendant of what shipped in this wax box. Spider-Man #29 (the JW50 anchor) is the character-flagship base card in the checklist, and roughly one hologram falls per box, which keeps break-value math attractive even at mass production. Sealed wax stays affordable in absolute terms because Impel printed the product at genuine mass scale, but the cultural weight is disproportionate.
How to identify
1990 Impel Marvel Universe Series 1 wax box, 36 packs. Distinguish from Series 2 (1991) and Series 3 (1992), each of which is a separate product with its own hologram set. Original wrappers reference the 1990 issue and the MH1-MH5 hologram chase. Confirm the first-year issue for value.
