The 1989 Upper Deck Baseball Low Series wax box is the shrine of the junk-wax era. It contains card #1 Ken Griffey Jr., the rookie that told collectors the modern hobby had arrived. Also inside: Nolan Ryan throwing a football (#774 High Series bleed), and the Dale Murphy reverse-negative error (#357). Upper Deck's product was expensive at retail ($15 a pack, roughly triple the competition), the boxes were printed at conservative runs by junk-wax standards, and the hologram on each card back made counterfeiting hard. Every card the modern era considers a rookie shrine traces back to this box.
