Why it matters

Donruss's 1991 Elite Series was the first major serial-numbered star-player insert set in the mass hobby. Eight cards (Ryne Sandberg, Cal Ripken Jr., George Brett, Barry Bonds, Bo Jackson, Rickey Henderson, Darryl Strawberry, Jose Canseco), each hand-numbered to 10,000 copies. Set the template for every serial-numbered insert that followed.

How to identify

1991 Donruss Elite Series cards feature a distinctive gold-etched border and hand-numbering '/10000' on the back. Eight-card set: check the numbering, the etched border, and the Elite Series wordmark.
