Rated Rookies and the red-and-black shield.
Donruss entered baseball card production in 1981 alongside Fleer after the antitrust ruling. Its enduring innovation was the 'Rated Rookie' subset, a curated shortlist of prospects Beckett would confirm the following year. The 1984 Donruss Mattingly, 1986 Donruss Canseco, and 1989 Donruss Griffey are all Rated Rookies. The design changed every year but the red-and-black shield banner was the constant, and the exact visual cue that made kids stop flipping and check the corner.
